PräsentationLe 11 février 1990, Nelson Mandela quitte Robben Island et laisse derrière lui 28 années de solitude durant lesquelles sa «faim de liberté pour son peuple est devenue faim de liberté pour tous, blancs et noirs». Son autobiographie «A Long Walk to Freedom» a tellement marqué la célèbre celliste allemande Maria Kliegel qu'elle a commandé une oeuvre au compositeur Wilhelm Kaiser-Lindemann en 1995, Hommage à Nelson M. Op.27.
A Long Walk Not Yet Ended s'inspire de cette oeuvre musicale et va plus loin en lui ajoutant textes, voix et images. Mais A Long Walk Not Yet Ended n'est pas la biographie d'un homme qui est devenu le symbole mondial du pardon et de la liberté, le symbole de la réconciliation dans un pays marqué par la ségrégation raciale. De Frantz Fanon via Aimé Césaire à Richard Wright, pour ne citer que quelques représentants de la «pensée africaine», A Long Walk Not Yet Ended, mise en espace par Anne Simon, tente de retracer, à travers un tableau coloré, l'histoire riche en événements et en drames d'un continent entier, avec son expérience humaine unique, ce continent plein de contrastes qui s'appelle: Afrique.
The image of Nelson Mandela walking into freedom after 28 years of emprisonment was one of the most heartening of the past century. His subsequent election as President of South Africa has been even more remarkable. Inspired by Mandela's autobiography A Long Walk to Freedom, cellist Maria Kliegel felt compelled to express her admiration for the former South African President through music. What resulted was an extended suite scored for cello and percussion by Wilhelm Kaiser-Lindemann.
A Long Walk Not Yet Ended, based on this work, attempts to be more than just a musical biography of one of the most important figures of African history. A Long Walk Not Yet Ended is also a brilliant mixture of literary and visual performances, mirroring not only the circumstances and hopes of Mandela's remarkable life, but the thought of an entire continent, Africa.
